Why was 26 January chosen for Republic Day?
January 26 was chosen as the date for Republic Day in India because it marks the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India and establishing India as a republic. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 January 1950, with Dr. Rajendra Prasad taking oath as the first President of India. This day is celebrated as the Republic Day of India.

History
India gained independence from British rule on August 15th, 1947 through the Indian Independence Act 1947. This act partitioned British India into two independent dominions of the British Commonwealth, which later became the Commonwealth of Nations. At that time, India did not have a permanent constitution and was governed by the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935.
On August 29th, 1947, a resolution was passed to establish a drafting committee, headed by Dr. B R Ambedkar, to draft a permanent constitution. The draft constitution was submitted to the Constituent Assembly on November 4th, 1947. After several revisions and discussions, the assembly of 308 members signed the two copies of the constitution, in English and Hindi, on January 24th, 1950. The Constitution came into effect throughout the nation on January 26th, 1950, with Dr. Rajendra Prasad taking office as the first President of the Indian Union.
As per the transitional provisions of the new Constitution, the Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India, and since then January 26th is celebrated as Republic Day in India.
